Find the right spot for it! It should be in a sunny location as the heat will help with the breakdown of all the organic matter you are putting into your bin. Start with a layer of soil in the bottom (less than 1 inch). The soil has the microbes in it needed to break down the organics. Then start adding your food scraps. It is most important that you NEVER add any oils, bones, meat products to your composting. Add only vegetable scraps and fruit scraps that you are not eating. You can also add paper, kleenex, egg cartons (break them up into small pieces) and egg shells. Wash out your egg shells first (no one wants salmonella) and either break them up or leave them as is. The heat and just the natural breakdown of the matter will begin and weekly you can rotate the bin. If you have a lot of organic matter to put inside your bin, after you add it shovel in another bit of garden soil. It's the layering that will make the compost pile work the best. Hope this helps.
