Here are some ideas for your counters at the first link below. You'll have to scan through as not all the search results were for counters, but the first three are along with more throughout the search. http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=painting+counter I'm with the crowd that would refinish and stain the cabinets so I'm not much help there. I do think these would look great in a darker stain. Maybe gel stain in walnut.

I like what you have done with this as is. It is the look I'm looking to put in my bathroom. If it is not the look you are looking for maybe just stain/paint the cabinets and add counter tops, sink and faucet. Change the mirror and lights. IE I have run into a problem with the center of cabinets - faucet location - and light location not lining up. In that case a full wall mirror would hide that best.

I would paint the cabinet with a cream color similar to the sink color and update the pulls. You might also use a faux granite coverup on the Formica counter such as sold at gianiproducts.com. The results are beautiful and easy to do. Your friends will think you have replaced the counter top with real granite.

I used Rustoleum paint on the laminate cabinets AND even on the laminate countertop. I put a couple of coats of polyurethane on the countertop too. We built the corner shelf unit and glued painted frames around the huge mirrors. Then we added some Sinkadoodles of course! :-) The deep browns may work well with your creamy sink too.
    • @Sinkadoodles Decals What type of Rustoleum paint worked on your laminate cabinets? Whenever I have tried to paint laminate, the paint could easily scratch off! Thank you in advance!
  • Change out the bathroom faucet would be a great improvement. And as someone mentioned, framing the mirror will also do wonders. Or replace the mirror with something you love. Painting the vanity may just change the look of the "marble" vanity top. I have used in my own master and other renovations Rustoleum's Expresso in a quart can (less than $10). It is a great deep brown color which made my 28 year old build grade vanity top look so much better when I was done. I would change out the handles or spray paint them with Rustoleum's hammered spray paint in the chrome color to match the new faucet in brushed nickel or chrome. For a few dollars you can totally transform your bathroom. As far as painting a vanity, I would not. maybe change out the sink to a creamier color in the vanity top could also update the look. I have spoken to many professionals and seen what happens if you try to paint bathroom vanities, tubs, and sinks DIY. Even the professionals say that painting is a short term fix and cause peel or scratch easily. If anything, put the money in the upgrades such as lights, faucets, handles, and even a mirror. If you still do not like how the vanity top looks, then shop for a new one.

i would remove all doors and hardware and paint the cupboards. I painted my kitchen cupboards and everyone thinks they are new. A new sink, maybe the one that sits on the countertop would be nice. Or just leave the present counter top there and buy a new sink and taps. The biggest expense is the cabinet and painted it would be beautiful. Maybe some very smart knobs also. Your color would depend on the wall and floor colors. I used an offwhite, or ivory shade and I love it!!!! That would be nice with your present countertop. Good luck.

Check out my blog for some ideas. I framed a large mirror in one area and painted the countertops in another bath. http://simplebutfabulous.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_14.html

Shop garage sales for a large framed mirror or frame your existing one. I found the perfect craftsman style lights for my bathroom at Habitat for Humanity store. 2 sconces and a pendent for 75.00. They were brand new. Although we replaced our vanity, your's might just look fab painted out. Here is a picture of our finished vanity minus the pendent that only recently found it's place above the short wall between the vanity and toilet area.

I agree with Marie do all the other work first and then if still not happy with counter tops make a change.. I have found this product (was searching for something else) it looks good from pictures (planning on using on a project in near future) only real down fall is only heat resistant to 122 deg. http://www.instant-granite.com/

Leasa, I recommend Rustoleum Cabinet and Countertop Restoration Kits. We have used the cabinet kit in our bathroom and it is amazing. It holds up to wear well also. No heavy stripping or sanding either. Everything you need is in the kit except gloves and cotton rags. We got ours at the local True Value store. There are two sizes. We used the smallest and have tons left over for another project. It was $80 +/- and there are no toxic fumes or smells.

@Lene No, we've never tried that. You have me interested now though, so I'll see if I can do some research on it. Earlier, I meant we had used lots of different things on cabinets. We've actually never done much with counters . . . just replaced them with laminate. So this will be good to look at options.

I going cheap counter top @Ikea. It was a desk top. Lots to choose from. Just cut a hole and add new sink. Paint base is cheapest and easiest. U can add tile around mirror for updated look.
  • I would leave the countertop the way it is, as it seems to be in good condition. What I would do is pain the cabinets a lighter beige color and replace the sink. This should really liven the space up. Here are a couple of photos for inspiration!

Hi Cheryl, we have not tried the counter top kit for the same reason. When we did our kitchen we ended up buying an inexpensive laminate counter top. we were very happy with the end result. Another thing you could consider is a butcher block counter top. I have even seen people use hard wood floor planks to make a counter top. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. on a side note...im having trouble downloading pics otherwise I would show you our before and after. hopefully I will have some luck later.

I used Rustoleum American Accents Fast-drying latex....but your countertop looks a lot smoother and shinier than mine did prior to painting. Maybe scuff it up good with some 80 grit sandpaper before painting? Oddly enough, I had tried to prime mine first...the primer didn't stick but the paint did! Who knows? Good luck.

I'd paint the cabinets a light cream color, install a white sink with new updated fixtures. Down the road you could do a cement counter top with Ardex. Best of luck.
