How to Build Easy Farmhouse Shelves

Farmhouse shelves are very in right now, but they are not difficult or expensive to build. Here's how I made my own rustic shelves:
If you're following my blog , you've seen my recent kitchen updates. I still had another tiny eyesore space to tackle -- the blocky heavy microwave/cookbook shelf. Here's what the space looked like before.
First is demo -- ahhhh so much more open already!
I'm using 2x10s for these shelves.  They are about $10 for an 8ft board.  You can't beat the price, and they have the thickness and rustic look I love!
Measure the space you have and cut your boards to size.  I cut them with my circular saw.
Once the boards are cut, sand them down.  I used 120 grit and my pad sander.  I just wanted the edges smooth but didn't want to take away all the rustic wood texture.  You can sand as much or as little as you like.  Then it's time to stain - I've been using this beautiful wood stain color mix in all of my kitchen updates - get the mix and my favorite top coat in my full blog post here.

The wall brackets are simple, yet have a little detail that really makes them nice.  If you aren't hitting studs in the wall, make sure you place anchors in the wall to hold it in there!  Just mark where your screws go and then drill and attach.
Voila! So much lighter and clean looking than what was there before.  It's the perfect spot to display some kitchen decor!  I love the way it ties in all the other wood tones in my kitchen too.

Do you love the open-shelf farmhouse look?
