What is the durability of cement finished counter tops?

We have laminate counter tops and was thinking of striping down to the wood and using a thin cement finish.

In my opinion they look great, and are easy to patch/fill if chipped, but they are very persnickety, the seams look a little sloppy to me and they need to seal it twice a year, I think. Is that helpful?
