Homemade weed killer?

I've heard there are ingredients that kill weeds but are not as toxic as store-bought weed killer. Has anyone made "homemade weed killer"? Does it work well?

Regular house vinegar will not work. Ten percent or 20 percent vinegar, I found here in Houston at the feed store. 1 gallon vinegar add 1 cup orange oil. I found orange oil at lowes and saw at feed store also. I just tried this and within 3 hours in the hot sun everything was brown.
