A yard of 54" wide fabric will do two average dining chairs (seats only). If you're shopping locally your best bet is to take one of the removed seats with you. This way if there's any pattern to the fabric you'll know for sure just how much fabric you'll need to center the pattern on the seat. Most fabric store clerks will be able to help you with this. Not so much at a WM as they rarely have trained fabric/craft department clerks anymore.

Oh..do I have to replace the foam padding? I am very new with DIY projects.

@I agree with Cynthia about the foam padding. You might want to cover it with batting to soften the edges even if the foam is still in good condition, but that's not necessary.

If the foam padding is in good condition no you don't need to replace.

I am about ready to post two photos of the chair I want to recover. The fabric is very dirty, even though I tried cleaning them, still nasty.

1/2 yard per chair, a stapler and a bottle of wine did my 6 chairs last time and they now need it again. I chose a fabric with virtually no pattern in order to keep it simple.
