You can use chalkpaint if you'd like- this way you need not sand and prime, all you have to do is throuoghly clean the surface and start painting!
Remove all hardware, clean, degrease (Kutter works nicely), patch up with plastic wood, sand really shiny areas lightly. Chalk paint, wax or poly, and replace hardware.
