If the problem is not too major, you could get wet plants or create a rain garden. If you think it's more serious than I would suggest putting in a drain. French drains swallow up the water accumulating around the foundations of your house, while yard drains can drain water from anywhere on your yard.

The ground should slope away from the house as water will eventually hurt the foundation.

Yes, a French drain would be the best solution. Not too hard to do, nor overly expensive, and done correctly will last forever.

Have you thought about raised garden beds or hanging plants? I don't like either solution, but it might be the only thing that will work for you right now.

It would be a good idea to see what can be done to remedy the poor drainage on your lot -- before it causes any damage to the foundation of the house.

Need to get help from a contractor to check drainage around the house foundation. Is the water staying there because it can't drain away from the house or is the property just "swampy"? I'm from Kent County Delaware originally so very familiar with land in that DE that can be below sea level. You might need an excavator to grade your property so the water is able to drain properly. French drains could be installed in the ground to help with run off from your rain spouts. My parents house with a basement was built in 1952 over a natural spring so the basement would flood when the water table got high!!! You don't want this water issue to continue! Best wishes.
