Curbside Junk Becomes Beautiful Picnic Table!!!!

This makeover is so much fun! While driving with my family a few weeks ago, I spotted these pieces laying on the curb.
I didn't think anything about them. I was just going to drive by, but my husband wanted to get a better look at them. I had no idea what they were and when he got out, he figured it out. It was the iron base to a picnic table! I didn't believe him until he stood them up and explained it to me. After I saw that, I couldn't wait to bring them home and make them functional and pretty again!
We had barn wood boards from a barn pick we did last year. These boards were going to complete our curbside picnic table find.
To make the iron look better, I washed it and gave it a coat of {aff} Rustoelum Flat Black spray paint.
For the table top and the seats, we had to cut the barn boards down a few inches so they would fit . Then, we sanded them down really well.
Once all the boards were screwed onto the base, we used {aff} Thompsons Water Seal all over the boards. We use this stuff all the time on outdoor projects. It really works well to repel water off pieces outdoors.
This curbside rescue is one of my favorites of all time! I was going to pass these pieces up because I didn't think they were anything usable! So glad my husband wanted to get a better look at them!

do you know anything about the age? I might be able to help? In 1965 my parents purchased this tables twin from a Company. It was the perfect size for our Family of eight. It sat in the kitchen with one end against the wall and a old transistor radio sat against the wall. I was born that year and later they put my high chair up to the other end. As time went on and the family married off. The table moved out side. My parents grew old and the wood rotted. like the pieces you found, my parents stored them away. About five yrs ago I was given the pieces. A year ago we sanded it all down, painted it a wild shade of turquoise , and put some new seasoned boards . I loved seeing yours, I have a lot of memories with mine. I still wear the scare I got on my lip at age 3 from playing on it in the kitchen and cutting my lip on the metal. Didn't think there were any more left. Love it, good to know mine isn't the only one left, I am glad you rescued her. Donna from Illinois. ❤️

What if one doesn't happen to have scrap barnwood laying around and waiting for a project? What type of wood and how much of it would you buy for something like this?

    BTW, your table is spectacular!!
