Hi Carolyn, That sounds so pretty. Anything that climbs loves lattice. If lattice is out of the question, you could wrap chicken wire around one of the posts. Do you actually have the climatus yet? If not, you could also use ivy or anything that climbs. "Wave" petunias would be a nice addition. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Take note of the path of the sun in the summer. Plant the Clematis on the opposite side of which ever side of gets the most sun. It will be easier to train if it follows the sun up and over the top of the pergola rather than away from it. This information will also help you find the best positioning for the pergola if it's not already set up.
I agree with the lattice idea. Attach pieces of lattice to the posts and let the clematis grow right up. Consider using plastic lattice so it will last forever.
