I'd like to put some kind of storage shed outside on my deck. Can I use it to store things like clothes and stuff?

Will they get ruined being outside - there's a lot of sun on that side of the house. Are there certain kinds of sheds that this would work better with? Looking for advice from the Hometalk crew...

Brandon, Storing clothes in any unstable (unconditioned) environment is not a good idea. heat+cold = moisture. That means mildew and mold.

I'm sure you have seen some of those Infomercials on the "space bag" It is a plastic storage bag that you suck the air out of with a vacuum cleaner. If your clothes are stored in something like that you should be fine. As Level One mention moisture and temp swings will be your concerns. Depending on what items are being stored this will have more or less effect. Many home owners store things in "unconditioned" attics where temp swings can be huge with out any trouble. My grandparents had an attic that was full of stuff in the mid-west..books clothes, old radios furniture and just about anything you could think of. The items stored there were in better shape than stuff stored in their "conditioned" basement, due to the drier environment. If this shed is weather tight you should be fine if minor precautions are taken. I have three outdoor sheds here in Colorado, that are all "unconditioned" I have stored stuff out there for years with out any trouble...

Thanks for the info, KMS. What is a weather-tight shed made out of? Are they real expensive? I'd get some of those vacuum bags instead if it'll save me $$...

space bags are good. Put a dryer sheet like "bounce" in there. Keep them smelling nice.

Brandon, By weather tight it should be properly flashed where is joins the side of the house if of a "lean too" style, a proper door with a raised threshold will also be more weather tight than a "site" built door. This is my free standing shed, 8 x12 when I built it it cost me about 1200 in materials. That includs two walls of multiple 2 foot deep shelving inside.

It really depends on the type of weather that you get on your deck. If it often gets wet due to rain or humid weather, then it is best not to store clothing inside the storage shed. They will only get damp and smell and you would need to wash them before using in the future. Unless you store them inside a waterproof or Ziploc bag instead. You could try it out first before storing them there for a long period of time.
