How can we make our own, decorative window shutters?

Love some ideas and tips for making shutters for my ranch style house. Could be simple, nothing fancy. Step by step would be nice.

Use 3 to 4 wood boards (maybe cedar) and lay them side by side. Add a horizontal cross piece near top and near botttom.
