If you have laminate counters you could always paint them with chalkboard paint. That is what I did and it only cost $50. Here's my post in case you are interested: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/kitchen-dining-furniture/chalkboard-countertops-1848045 I'm partial to black counters. :)

We have golden oak cupboards that I was tired of also but my husband would not consider paint. When the light beige colored countertop needed replacing we went with a granite pattern in a darker color, black and grey with some brownish red and white specks and it turned out great. I love the updated look.

Thinking of a greyed beige for the color when I can paint. The kitchen floor and living room carpeting are both a mixture of grey and beige.

painted cabinets can be beautiful, but can also end up looking really horrible. I've seen both. Be careful.

You need to pull some color out of what is already there....to go with your cabinets.Look at your new counters and write down all the colors you see...then you can choose a color that you like.
