I've heard you can drill holes and put Epsom salt in the holes. Never have I tried this so I don't know how long it woultake or the effectiveness but it might be worth a try as it's definitely cheaper than have a tree trimmer to mulch it up.

We sadly had to remove 2 trees from our property due to encroachment on the roofline of the house and our shed. They were HUGE shade trees - one 65 ft high and the other 90 ft. With trees that big, the activity caught the attention of the entire neighborhood and took a little over a week....and was quite expensive. They left huge stumps (we didn't have the extra $800 to have them removed.) We haven't done it yet, but were informed we could drill holes into the stump roots and poor epsom salts (dry) into the holes. It takes time, but eventually the salts would eat away the roots and the stump can be removed easily. Like I said, haven't tried it yet, but nice to have the info in our arsenal!

I had a hidius tree in the neigbors yard that was truly invasive. It was cut down by my neighbors leaving a stump 4 ft high. It syarted growing new branches!!! I pulled them off and poured hot old cooking oil over the top of it. That was 5 years to date and no new growth. ... I think I will put a huge clay pot on it with a flowering vine to drape down. It will take many years for the stump to break down.
