Hi! You'll need to clean and de-grease it really well. Then you can either use a primer first and then your paint color, or some of the better paints have primers included.

Clean it. Prime it. Paint it. Enjoy!!!!

Fill the grooves with drywall patching compound. Let it dry overnight. Next day go over the patch with a damp sponge to smooth it out. Prime the paneling with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Them paint your color.

I used to be a professional decorative painter. If I spent all my time cleaning and sanding, I wouldnt have made any money. Go to Home Depot and buy a primer called GLIDDEN'S GRIPPER. Roll it on. Let it dry for at least a day. Then paint over it with whatever paint you want. That stuff sticks to melamine, any surface, and your hands, altho it's water based. LOL. NEVER EVER sand Gripper tho. You'll end up with a humungous mess. I hope you post "after" photos. Good luck!!

I just tackled this same project. Cleaned with "Krud Kutter" (purchased off Amazon. Painted with enamel cabinet paint, purchased from Lowe's. Went on smooth, covered in one coat. Ugly brown paneling, now painted a light tan color. Best of luck.

Paint it using FUSION PAINT. They have a large variety of colors. No prep work needed. Please post pics when it's completed. Enjoy!!

I have used KIlz and Zinser 123 primers. All cover and have stain blocking. Then roll on whatever color you want. Good luck. Post pictures when finished please.

Instead of sanding, I used a Liquid Sandpaper knockoff (deglosser). It removed the grime, wax and whatever else was on there. I did go over it with a damp cloth for most of the walls, but not all of them, and the results were the same. I primed and then painted. Other than a couple of small chips in super high traffic areas (door edge, and casing), it has held up for close to 20 years.

When we painted our kitchen cabinets .... went to Lowes & bought cabine paint. Cleaned them first . They were the old yellow orange color . I was so sick of the color. Now a pretty gray called gravel. I understand gray may be going out of date , but a lot of colores go with it.

  • I've primed/painted paneling, but also cracked/aged the walls and even Venetian plastered paneling! It is quite versatile a starting point.
