Can you lay new carpet on top of old carpet

    No,you need to pull up the old carpet,then the new carpet will lay better with the padding under it.

    Not a good idea you would trapping all sorts dust mites best to pull up the old and if pad underneath is in good shape then lay new carpet

    Sounds like a good idea, but no! Carpeting is made from different materials, have different nap, and move differently. These differences can cause the new carpeting to wear out prematurely. Also carpeting needs to be stretched and fastened to tack strips along the perimeter. The existing carpeting already is attached this way no way to attach new carpeting. There is also the chance of peaks and valleys forming between the two carpets.

    I would not. Your old carpet and underlayment are probably gross if you want to cover them. You could make yourself ill by leaving all that stuff in the house. If the current carpet is stained and you can't remove them, then put a throw rug or furniture on top.

    Why would you do that? Bet you'd end up with a mess. Take up the old and put in new.
