I hear people talking about chalk paint these days. I have an old desk that I would like to give some color to so is chalk paint better or should I just use the simple paint in a can we've been using for years?

I think it really depends upon the condition of the piece and what kind of work you are wanting to put into it. The beauty of chalk paint is that there is not a lot of prep work required prior to painting, and if you like the distressed look, it is easy to achieve with chalk paint. If you want the finish to last, you need to either wax or seal with a polycrylic afterwards. If you use regular paint, the piece will have to be sanded and preferably primed prior to painting, but will not have to be sealed.

You're right, many people love chalk paint. I think it depends on the look that you want. Chalk paint is easy to use and covers in one or two coats. Plus you don't have to sand down the piece before painting. Most of the people who use chalk paint want to distress the item for a shabby chic look. If that's the look you want then chalk paint is definitely for you! With chalk paint you will want to seal the item either with chalk paint sealer or furniture wax. You can make so many stunning finishes by choosing a darker wax to bring out the shabby chic look. Lightly sanding edges and high points adds to the look of the piece.
