What steps one should take for maintaining the outdoor fountain?

We have an outdoor fountain and we really pay maintenance cost as it gets clogged up every year. What useful maintenance tips would be suggested so that we may take in order to avoid the mounting maintenance cost and also keep the fountain functional throughout the years.

What is clogging it? If it is algae, then add bleach to the water once a month. If is is leaves etc, you need to prevent it from getting into the pump. Try putting one of those scotch-brite scouring pads or something similar over the pump in-take. You could also back-wash it by disconnecting the hose from the pump and putting a garden hose up against the fountain-spray end and flushing it back toward the pump end.
