Laundry Room Floating Shelves

My honey-do list certainly isn't getting any shorter, so I wanted to check laundry room shelving off the list ASAP. I would have done it sooner had I know how easy it actually would be! This project is super simple and only takes about an hour to do. Actually, more time - but that's because you have to sit around and wait for the stain to dry!
Gather your materials:

1x4s and 1x8 wood boards
2x2 furring boards
Wood glue
Finish nails
3.25" screws
Sand paper
Stain

Everyone has a different size laundry room, so measure for your space and cut accordingly.
Now we're going to cut an assemble our 1x4s and 1x8s into a box, leaving one side open to receive the shelf frame we'll build in just a bit...
Once you have your box built using the 1x4s and 1x8s, wood glue and finish nails (I used brad nails). It's time to give everything a light sanding and apply a wood stain.

Optional: you can fill the nail holes with stainable wood putty to make it a cleaner look.
While the wood stain is drying, we can build the frame. The frame is constructed using 2x2 wood furring boards.
After cutting the wood furring boards to the right size (see here for details) we can screw the frame together.
Next we'll attach the frame to the wall using long 3.25 inch screws. Use two screws to attach the frame on each wall stud to make sure it's securely attached to the wall!

I actually built two floating shelves, so I have two frames on my wall icon
The final step is to slip the shelves over the frames, attach the shelves to the frame using finish nails along the back edge.

Of course, you'll likely have to twiddle your thumbs while you wait for your stain to finish drying...
The final touches is all about making it your own. Add a wall decal, your favorite laundry products and a few decor items!

They make a plastic collapsible step stool, that you can buy at Walmart for less than $20. ( I guess it's still that cheap?). hang it on a wall next to your appliances.

I would like to warn you guys, if you aren't an avid DIYer, make sure your cuts are perfectly square. Also, buy or make some shims. If your walls aren't plumb, you may need to shim up the frame of your shelf, to keep the final product level. I would also use stainless steel L brackets on either (each, on center) side of each protruding 2x2, to help add structural integrity, and support heavy liquid detergents, etc.
