Tomatoes will grow and grow all over the place. But when and if anything else does come up it doesn't produce any veggies.

Many things affect growing of veggies. Your soil is all important....You need a nice mix of garden dirt, compost and some peat moss for moisture. Your sun conditions dictates how your plants grow and how often you water matters too. Most veggies like full sun and water a few inches per week. Don't drown plants but don't let them dry out either. It's best to read directions for each veggie you want to plant. There are many good sites on line for your specific plant. You can google that. Best wishes for a happy growing season.

My first step would be to take a sample of your soil to a local nursery. They can do an analysis and let you know if there is any issue.
