Plastic ware will help to prevent insects, but rodents will chew through anything except glass or metal. You can source large storage jars through Fillmore Container or SKS Bottle.

I have found that Rubbermaid makes great containers for dry food. Glass jars are also a good way to go if they have a good secure lid.

In my experience, glass works best. I make a habit of recycling glass jars and find they come in handy for many purposes, including food storage.

I've lived out in the country most of my life and I've always stored my dry goods and other groceries in food grade plastic containers. I've also used non-Food Grade Rubbermaid bins for things like potato chips, crackers, etc that can remain in bags and boxes, but you still don't want mice and bugs getting into. Walmart carries a good line of food grade containers (Rubber Maid) at very reasonable prices. You don't have to buy Tupperware .... I couldn't afford it! Also, if you have a local ice cream parlor that sells the different flavored hard ice cream in cones, I've purchased their empty plastic 3 gallon ice cream pails for .50 cents each ... and filled them with everything from cereals, oatmeal, baking supplies, dog food, etc.
