    some tapes have metric notations and some have inches/feet. Determne which kind you have. Some have one type of measurement on one side and the other type on the reverse side of the tape. Hold the end of the tape onthe edge of the item you are measuring and stretch it out to the other edge. Look at the tape and read the measurement. An example of a measurement might be 2' 3" or two feet three inches.

    Most of the tapes have a small amount before the actual measurment. Look for 0 next to a line. Place that line on edge of what you are measuring. Run it across what you want to measure and smooth it in place. Read the marker where it reaches the end of your item. It should be marked in inch or mm millimeters. Be sure you are on the side with inches. Each is broken down with little marks for 1/2,1/4, and some even go down to 1/16. These are not marked but if you end up about half way between numbers that is 1/2 I always opt for next full inch and adjust it later.
