We would also like to know what to do to our rock fireplace, very tired of its brown rock and black mortar. Please answer soon, we are sitting on dead ready to do this!!

Have you decided yet what to change to? If you are taking down the brown rock.. Chisel and hammer. We had clear varnish on our rock. Or was it polyurethane? Anyway it was because rock is poreous.
Cover the rock with plywood to make clean smooth walls around it, add molding and trim to it for a more finished professional look.
