Do not prune your Hydrangea until next year in early spring when the new growth starts to emerge,so the dead wood can be identified.

If you have pruned the plant before and it still bloomed you should be okay. Some hydranges bloom on old growth and if pruned won't flower, and some flower when pruned. Found this out the hard way!

To get bigger flowers, cut them all the way back. In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smooth hydrangeas will produce much larger blooms if pruned hard like this each year, but many gardeners opt for smaller blooms on sturdier stems.

i have a Limelight Hydrangea Bush/tree. Absolutely gorgeous with about 100 blooms. I've cut many of the flowers in the fall for wreaths and in the spring I just break off the old blooms that are left.

I have always waited until spring when you can see the buds and then trim off the dead. This way you will leave the height as is and not have to regrow to get the height you like.
