Get a stand planter box. I got mine at Rite Aid. It is waist high and you can put quite a few plants in it.

my mom did fairly well with those 'topsy turvy' tomato hanger contraptions, and a garden hose with a long watering 'arm' on it - she needed help getting it hung, but that was pretty much it.

a planter stand like Lori suggested can be great fun

that's kind of the cadillac version, but window boxes on a table work just as well

herbs are, for the most part, easy to grow and harvest, and many of them thive in less than stellar soil (also, nasturtiums grow in dry, depleted dirt nothing else will live in, and the flowers are tasty)

if you can tell us a bit more about where you are, how much sun, etc, we can maybe suggest other plants :)

My hubby is disabled and I planted him a tomato, lettuce and peppers in three really big pots. I also planted my herbs in pots for him and started more lettuce in smaller pots to put in the bigger pot for when those are spent. I got him one of those kneelers that you can also flip over to a seat so he can care for "his garden" instead of going up to steep hilled tiers to the main veggie garden that I care for. I even started potato plants for him in two cracked garbage cans that we have on the patio for more sun. He can sit on his kneeler or any other chair to give them any care they need. We put the large planters on those roller platforms so they can be moved, like the lettuce gets moved to total shade out of the sun on really hot days to try to keep them from bolting longer. I have metal tiered stands that I found At Aldies that work perfect for mid to smaller sized pots so that I don't need to have a table or anything to keep them off the ground. I hope this helps give you another alternative idea so that you can have your veggies and care for them without too much difficulty.

tomato and peppers, egg plant, squash need a min. of 6-8 hours of full sun..tomato, egg plant, cukes, squash, need a container that will hold a min. of 5 gallon of growing medium. peppers need about 2 gal. of growing medium, or you can put 2 pepper plants in a container that holds 5 gal. of growing medium. lettuce and beets 4 plants to 5 gallon container. carrots about 10-12 per 5 gal. container, radish...about 10 in a 5 gal. bucket. the best part of growing in containers is very few weeds to pull.

containers come in a wide range of sizes, and prices. the least expensive that i have found are the commercial black plastic grow bags. the less expensive place is from a commercial growers supply. there is a company just a few miles north of me in dyersville. ia.

if you want a another option....a 40 lb bag of top soil will fill a 5 gal. container. you could set it on it's end, apply fertilizer and plant it up. make sure the water can drain out of it. for radish, carrots , you could lay it on its side make 2 slices length wise to plant them in.
