Where is the area in relation to your house? Could you make it a conversation area with a firepit?

If you know someone who has a tiller you could prepare a garden bed for shade planting, or make a raised bed that is tall enough that you will not have to deal with the soil at ground level. You can also plant some veggies or herbs that would deal with less sunlight like leaf lettuce. Just how much morning and or afternoon sunlight does the area get?

Sorry, I see no picture of the area. If you don't have sun until after 2:00 P.M. your plants won't get a whole lot of hot sun. In regard to the critters, if you do a raised garden with a fencing around it like chicken wire you may be able to keep the critters out. I don't know what possums don't like, but I have heard said that dog hair works well. I use cayenne pepper and grated irish spring for rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks and that works for me. My garden is on a hill and getting fencing to line up with the surface is impossible the whole way, so I block the holes, but they can still get in somehow.

Rent a tiller if you need better soil conditions. If you live in an area you can hire day labor that's a good choice. Just pay them, provide tools, drinks and lunch.

there's plenty of things that do well in the shade (leafy things like kale, rooty things like beets and carrots) and if the dirt isn't good, sometimes, the best thing is to build the bed up, and then let deep-rooted plants work their magic over a number of years.

a picture really would help, so we have an idea of how 'much' shade, how close to the house, how big, what else is there, and the like.
