Where is the area in relation to your house? Could you make it a conversation area with a firepit?
can you post a photo?
If you know someone who has a tiller you could prepare a garden bed for shade planting, or make a raised bed that is tall enough that you will not have to deal with the soil at ground level. You can also plant some veggies or herbs that would deal with less sunlight like leaf lettuce. Just how much morning and or afternoon sunlight does the area get?
Rent a tiller if you need better soil conditions. If you live in an area you can hire day labor that's a good choice. Just pay them, provide tools, drinks and lunch.
there's plenty of things that do well in the shade (leafy things like kale, rooty things like beets and carrots) and if the dirt isn't good, sometimes, the best thing is to build the bed up, and then let deep-rooted plants work their magic over a number of years.
a picture really would help, so we have an idea of how 'much' shade, how close to the house, how big, what else is there, and the like.
Here are some photos of the area I'm dealing with this is 1:00 afternoon sun and still in the shade.
