Not knowing what zone you are in I would suggest you check with your local garden center to see what perennials will thrive in your area. That said I would suggest lantana, bee balm, coreopsis, gaillardia, African daisies, butterfly bush for sun and hostas for shaded areas. Hope this helps!
I live in west central Arkansas. Very hot in the summer. We had our first garden last year and it did pretty good. My landscape is bare so Im just starting out. Unfortunately a big part of my lawn is full sun with exception to right around our house.
I would check with a garden center that has a good reputation. They would know what would work for your temps and sun situation. Have fun with your bare landscape that won't be bare for long. Do it in areas and plan out what you want where before you start and you should be good. Don't worry if it takes a while to do as it can consume a lot of time and money. I have been working on mine for almost three years and have not really done anything in the back yard other than the veggie garden! Working on the front of the house took one whole season, just at the front walk with having to remove old tired shrubs, laying pavers, preparing soil and planting, took nearly four months due to hot or rainy weather or lack of any more gardening budget.
