Are they in the ground or pot? and if in pot - do you need a larger pot? ? not enough sun? I have one in ground and in pot and they have come back for years and are very big.

If you have chives that you had last year they will grow like blades of grass Even if you add more they will still grow thin. So it's best to start with new pots of chives every year

  • I have mine in ground and theycome back every year in big thick clumps. Chances are your pot is too small and they are rootbound and possibly not getting enough sun.

I replaced mine in a pot this year and they started out really fine and seem to be getting a little thicker. I replaced the soil completely and fertilized. Perhaps they just need more time. Chives start out finer when they are young and get thicker as they mature. I wonder if perhaps some chives are just finer than others. Try giving the plant time to mature a little more and see if the chives get thicker.

My chives were in the ground and then I put them in a pot last year... they did so good this summer. I gave them some foo and they got bigger and darker green. Very lovely!

Then I took and tranplanted some of it into a smaller pot to bring into the house for winter. They were thing and started to fall over. So I clipped them all off. They look like baby plants. I even gave them food.. maybe to much water? Not sure but it's driving me batty. I finally cut them way down to start over and the next day I needed chives. Gah...

I know this is an old post... but anyone find out what chives need to survive? The pot is big enough. It's not root bound. But I did take it from a younger plant that was growing in the pot with the older plant. That could be why? Or it's to close to the cold window? I don't know... maybe I waited to long to bring it in...
