Use a Rustoleum Primer first and then repaint with your favorite Rustoleum metal paint.
Lightly sand or use steel wool before painting and wipe clean.

I am all about the spray paint on this project. I agree with Deborah about Rustoleum. If you don't feel confident in your spraying abilities, rustoleum also can be purchased in cans now, and they really do adhere great. Make sure the door is clean and dry before starting :)
