Somebody said preen. At Walmart or home depot garden department. For weeds. Then cover with black plastic. ? Preen? You would know more than I would.

Widen the shrub border and have someone cut in the edge with straight shovel - this cuts roots. Be sure to mulch well 2 inches at least. I use an edge trimmer that swivels vertical to keep edge neat during growing season. If real problem with weeds use round-up on weeds only and not when it is windy.

Preem is a fertilizer do not use on weeds. I also have areas where I use pavers for edging and run the mower wheels on the paver edging - eliminates trimming.

Preen is a pre-emergent which means it stops new seeds from growing. It has no effect on plants that are already there. So if you or someone else dug out all of the grass and filled in with dirt, theoretically no new weed seeds would grow. The problem is getting every root of every weed that is in there because it won't kill the roots.
