In Australia - Hardie board is a cement based cladding (mad by James Hardie) - so any exterior water based paint is fine - if using board inside then an interior water based paint. Check on the cans of paint or ask at the paint shop
If it is in the bathroom and will be covered by tiles get the waterproofing paint (Red Guard, really red) to add an extra layer of protection.
We used Sherwin Williams water base exterior satin.
