A Rose Covered Cottage

If there was a recipe for a cottage garden, I think romantic flowers like roses, hollyhocks, delphinium and lavender would definitely be on the list of ingredients. Such a recipe would also call for a dash of colorful annuals to fill in window boxes and containers. A closer look at the 'Fairy Rose'. This is a rose that starts blooming in June, and with regular deadheading, keeps on blooming into fall. Japanese Beetles seem to ignore it. One drawback: it has no scent.

Regular hollyhocks do not do well in Florida, so gardeners here looking for a cottage garden feel should seek out Vietnamese hollyhocks. They can be a little tricky to find, but I have seen them for sale at the annual Leu Gardens plant sale in Orlando, which this year is March 15-16.

@Sensible Gardening and Living I agree they look very pretty and delicate, but they are amongst the toughest roses in my garden.
