How will I know when the squash borers are going to lay their eggs?

I am tired of picking a great yellow squash to find out that there's a hole in the bottom.
Someone told me to use a row cover. The question is when do I put it on because I want the bees to pollinate the flowers.

Use a organic insect systemic control with a organic insect spray for the plants themselves

Row covers are such a hassle. I started using kaolin clay to prevent borers and squash bugs from destroying my cucurbits. It coats them to prevent the larva from being able to chew the leaves and stems. It may not save everyone, but it helps and is so much easier than wrapping the stems in nylon.
