I live in So Florida where red Fire Ants are a serious health threat. While I prefer to avoid chemicals, fire ant killer pesticides exist in which the ants carry granules back to kill the queen. Colony dies out quickly. Where there is one colony keep an eye out for nearby mounds. One bite will tell you if these are indeed fire ants. They tend to swarm on you and then bite almost in unison.

Their bite is painful and injects tissue destroying enzymes that result in pustules that take weeks to heal. pets, farm animals and peopled have died from their bites either by allergy or sheer number of bites and the dosage of venom. Don't walk barefoot in grass in Florida, stay on sidewalks, watch for excavated dirt mounds. Do not disturb mound. If you do within seconds they will be a mass of movement. I had to depant on a golf course to brush hundreds off my legs after accidentally stepping on a mound. Good thing I always followed mom's advice regarding clean underwater. By the way, if your stance would result in stepping on their nest, you are allowed free relief.

Diatomaceous earth is a powdered lava product with sharp edges. Here in Canada t comes in several brands such as Ant Out. All you have to do is sprinkle some on the ant hills and the ants will carry it into the nest. I find it takes 1-2 applications. Also, if you can water a bit more it helps stop new nests from forming. They like to live in dry patches where their communities don't get regularly flooded.

  • packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are coming in if you can find it, or even on your counter in a small lid. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.
