we have tried bleach as well. Lots of bleach. I wouldn't plan on planting anything in that spot afterwards of course!

please don't spray. Roundup is toxic and is only sold here because congress gets mega bucks from Monsanto. Defoliate by mowing or weedeating. Pull vines off of and away from trees (it'll die above once stems are severed). Then you can smother using heavy duty cardboard. Suggest using TECNU to wash after exposure. WEAR LONG SLEEVES, BOOTS. Wash clothing in hot water.

I have tried many methods of killing poison ivy and I do understand that Roundup is not the most environmentally friendly, but it does the job better than anything else. Most methods of poison ivy removal have collateral damage, like the bleach, or you will be chasing the ivy as the roots you don't get pop up elsewhere. I have also not found a combination of protective equipment that will keep me from contact with the itch causing stuff when I pull or dig it out. A gallon of premix Roundup lasts me years. One spritz and done. Very small amount of spray with just enough to wet the leaves. Next year new plants come up elsewhere because the birds reseed the stuff but the ones the Roundup hits are dead from tip of leaf to tip of root.

All of the above is good advice - but in add, suit up and dig it out! This will help as a long term solution!

Two cups of salt in a LARGE pot of boiling water. Pour this directly onto the ugly things and they will be shriveled up kn no time. Works great on weeds too, but be careful, it will also kill the grass!

To kill weeds, I mix a bit of salt and dish soap in vinegar. Pour on the weeds. It has killed everything I have tried so far, but fortunately I have not been faced with poison ivy. But realize, it kills everything it is on, not just the weeds.

    3 cups white vinegar

    1/2 cup table salt

1 tablespoon liquid detergent or soap (I use Dawn) for stick-to-itiveness.

    Directions

    1. Mix vinegar and salt until the salt is completely dissolved. Stir in liquid dish soap, and pour into a spray bottle.
    2. Spray onto the green growing leaves of the plants.
    3. Wait a week, then repeat on any survivors. Best time to apply: during a dry spell.
