Give me some ideas to transform an old inexpensive veneer dresser?

I am creating a guest bedroom and have an old but serviceable tall dresser for the room. It's inexpensive veneer (put it together from a box!) the top is a little bubbled from water. Son moved out and would love to be able to do something to still use it otherwise I'll just have to chuck it out!

If you want an easy solution, use chalk paint. You don't need to prep at all, no sanding or primer, just clean and paint. For the bubbled top, instead of painting that part, you could mod podge an old map on it, or use contact paper or wall paper with sticky back to cover over the bubbles.

The easiest solution would be to use a table runner on top and have it hang on both sides. Easy, cheap and cleanable.
I would get a piece of stone cut to sit on top of the dresser Or possibly sand out the bubble & paint with a stone finish paint.
I sanded to small bedside tables that were blonde in color and painted them
