I don't know if this would work for groundhogs but it works for moles I have. I make a mixture of castor oil, three small bottles, some liquid dish soap, about 2 oz., and then use a sprayer to put it in, a gallon or two sprayer, and fill the rest with water and spray the area it is found and spray some extra if any holes found. Try it. Hope it helps .
Use red fox urine or coyote urine. Can be found in most hunting type stores such as Bass Pro Shops. Comes in a liquid or a stick much like a deodorant stick. We used it and it works. Haven't seen a groundhog in months.
Shoot the little bugger next time you see him! Or try using electronic signal emitting devices that deter them. We've used them for gophers and it worked well.
They will devastate your garden especially vegetable plants and their fruit! Yes shoot it or live trap it with cabbage leaves smothered with peanut butter, or their favorite- muskmelon or cantaloup. Find his hole entrance, often they have 2 or 3 leading to the same den.
Or you can buy woodchuck bombs you light the fuse and send down their hole then quickly cover the entrance with an old blanket to poison them with gas fumes.
Sounds cruel but if you don't, say goodbye to all your hard work. I hate these vile creatures! Been battling them yearly! They are also very trap wary, can be agressive if you cage one and are a target specie for rabies!
See answer about moles above, Plant "Crown Imperial" flowers for any burrowing animal.
hw If you just want to "shoo" a groundhog, it's been my experience that simply approaching them makes them take off. I kind of enjoyed watching them. One year we watched a whole family, mom, dad and two babies in our backyard. The babies were adorable. We only saw them in the Spring. They must have gone elsewhere the rest of the year.
