Any ideals on changing my kitchen cabinets without removing stain.

They are oak and they have a red cast to the stain and I would like more of a darker color. I have always hated them.

I hand sanded mine lightly, wiped down and distress with sage and buttermilk then painted with roosters ,chickens and watermelon. So therefore if you hate them so mush go to lowes and pick a darker color you like and paint them. I know, mine is oak also and a little harder to paint but it can be done . It will show the grain thou

If you paint them, you can totally transform the way your kitchen looks. If you have a source to find Annie Sloan's chalk paint or now Home Depot has their line of chalk paints, I would consider this and then there the traditional sanding (or using liquid sandpaper/deglosser), priming, and painting. Short of sanding down the cabinets to bare wood which will take a great deal of time and energy, you could paint them and a beautiful gray or even chocolate. Spray paint your handles to give them a fresh look and your kitchen will look like a million bucks. I painted mine (which is here on Hometalk) and even though it is not dark grey I bought my paint in the mistint area for $5! I will change the top cabinets later (I think) to a lighter color and paint the bottoms a dark grey. But for now my kitchen makes me enjoy baking and cooking...Good luck and do not be afraid!

If you like the stained look but not the color..give them a sand and apply a coat of color stain-and-urethane-in-one product. If you are painting you can get around the sanding by using a liquid gloss remover and washing afterwards with TSP or a TSP substitute. I highly recommend using a high quality coat of high hide primer sealer such as Zither before painting. This will save a lot of time, agro and paint when painting the cupboards. The paint finish will look smooth and professional if you use a good sealer primer.

Thank you, right after church today I went by the Home-Depot and the sales person told me the same thing. I think this is the way I am going to go. I just love this web site, everyone is so helpful. Thanks again and if you have any more good ideals let me know, I am always changing something.
