How to paint or stencil a Foot stool?

I have a foot stool that the kids used to stand on when washing their hands. It is stained dark wood. I want to paint and stencil something that could be for a girl or a boy.
Any suggestions.

something short but inspirational. I recently stenciled a small table "WORK HARD DREAM BIG"
I would sand it lightly give couple coats of a good prim and then it's a clean slate for you to paint and decorate

I always liked "You are Special" on things for children. Maybe add hearts, little animals, smileys, etc.
