You have to take them in in the winter. Terra cotta is porous so water gets in and freezes which causes cracks.

If you have a garage or some sort of waterproof storage container, you can always drag them inside or place the pots on top of the lid of the storage container, once you've done this, then turn the container upside down over them and close it like you would when it is rightside up. Make sense?

I have some help - if you are willing to redo your large ones. I have the same problem with large pots so this year I got some Styrofoam packing (not the kind that melts in liquid) and I redid all of my pots with fresh dirt. You could use any Styrofoam that comes with items you order if you can. Large pieces can be broken up into smaller ones. First I emptied all of my pots then I put in a layer of the Styrofoam pieces. You'll have to use your judgement about how deep to do it depending on the depth of your pot. I then covered the Styrofoam with coffee filters to prevent the dirt from falling into it, then added some dirt, then my plants, then some more dirt to finish it up. It really helped with my larger pots! Now you should be able to move them. Another idea is to find rolling stands to put them on so you can roll them into a garage. Maybe wrap them in old blankets will help too.

You can get a pottery glaze sealer sold at craft stores. It will help to keep it from cracking. Just remember to do about 3 coats of the glaze & make sure to let each coat dry thoroughly between each coat. The glaze will also prevent water from seeping through the pottery which will help to prevent any cracking. Happy glazing & crafting!

there is a product, a clear glaze that you coat them with ,best before planting, but paint over the ones already filled. it's a level of protection.
