What is the best way to repaint an old deck?

I was very disappointed when using Behr's deckover paint for my weathered deck last year. It was the thickest paint and the most difficult painting job I have ever done. On top of it, the paint chipped very early on. I wonder if I missed a step or what I did wrong. Any thoughts? It has to be repainted this year...

Marie, was your deck completely dry and given ample time to cure? Did you follow all of the directions on the container (did it call for a base of something, etc? )

Wow. Weathered decks are hard work. Truth be told, we used the Behr deck paint and it was horribly thick, but we didn't have so many issues because we prepped so much that we should've replaced the balcony instead of trying to save it. We had to sand everything down, power wash it, wait almost a whole week, prime the deck then we painted. Wood slats are probably cheaper for what we did. Good luck on your project.

To be honest with you, call Behr and explain the situation of what happened. There could be many reasons it did not hold up.I in the past have had issues with some products and they were very helpful and refunded my money.

I had a guy come in and do my deck. First thing he did was clean deak and then he sanded some rough spots. Then he put a primer on and let sit for a day . next he put a real good poarch and deck paint on it. He toldme stay off deck will be back in 4 days. He came back put a sealer on it and 4 days later I could use deck . I had to be patient for 2 weeks to have a nice deck. Deck was done 2 years ago and still looks good.

Thank you. I did not use primer or Sealer. The Home Depot lady told me she used same product on her porch and it was fantastic, did not mention a primer . I trusted her.

I listen to a store person once and had to redo my project. I find a professional now to ask ? when doing a project. The man I used for deck had been doing decks a very long time. He gave me alist to buy all the products and just charge me for labor. Wish you good luck with redoing your deck.
