We had the same problem until we learned a few hydrangea facts. Some common problems are either to much pruning or pruning at the wrong time. With hydrangeas they bloom best when you don't do any pruning at all. When they go dormant in the winter resist pruning what may look like dead parts. They don't like pruning at all! Also hydrangeas like room to grow & their blooming will be consistent if they have at least 4'-5' on each side to flourish. If you must do some pruning, you need to know which type of hydrangea you have. Some can be cut backa little while with others pruning will literally stunt their growth. New growth can be pruned in early spring. Old growth should only be pruned after flowering & cut just below where the bloom was. Understanding the different types of varieties of hydrangeas & their spacific needs is the best way to ensure lots of flowers! Hope that helps!

I use hydrangea feed and only prune dead branches a good while AFTER they leaf out, as the old wood may not leaf out until after new shoots come up, and many hydrangea only grow on old wood.
