I would like to create a map of all of the plants , shrubs and trees in my yard. How do I get started and how do I learn to identify the hundreds or thousands plants?

Start by measuring the area well and then sketching onto graph paper, using a consistent ft to inches ratio. add in landmark features, and then you can start plugging in plants, etc. I did this for a new owner when I sold my home, and used symbols, colored pencil, etc. If you have seasonal perennials, you can create layers using clear plastic overlays and markers.

to identity plants, I highly recommend the Plant Identification Facebook group. Submit a photo and your location & that it's a cultivated garden area, and you will usually have a response in minutes. They have been incredibly helpful to me.
