Did you have a late frost after the hydrangeas started to leaf out?
I had the same problem, healthy robust green leaves, late flower buds in September. I used Miracle Grow Shake and Feed the first week of April. The product says it's good for 90 days befor next feeding. I ignored that and reapplied the first week of May. All of my Hydrangeas are covered in flowers now. Yeah!
I do not cut mine down at all here in Wisconsin. When I do cut the dead branches is in the Spring when I see what does and does not have buds on. During the winter months i tie them up with bailing twine and just leave them. Then in Spring I untie them and cut the parts that don't have buds. I have never fed mine anything and each year I have big blooms. You should see them now they are beautiful. They are planted on the south side of the house. Try not trimming until Spring that may be the ticket
Just retired...I do the very same thing you do. I never trim until spring. It's just some years I'll have hundreds of blooms and some years none at all Until Sept, strange. Why do you tie them?
