How do you remove old vinyl backsplash in the kitchen?

No there is no adhesive to remove it. Just take your time and scrap it off with a flat scraper.

You need a scraper. Professionals use the ones that hold 2 inch long replaceable razor blades, but a metal paint scraper will work .

Heat it with a blow dryer to soften the adhesive and slowly scrape off with a wide putty knife. Open windows there may be some odor. Try not to burn the vinyl.

Try and see if using a steamer will loosen the adhesive underneath.

Beginning at the outside edge heat the tile with a blow dryer and when the glue softens up some insert the edge of a putty knife under the tile and lift until you can grab it and pull it away from the wall. Continue heating and pulling until it is all removed. Then, if there is alot of the mastic (glue) still sticking to the wall, soak several cloths in water and lay them over the mastic. Let the water soak into the mastic until it becomes soft. Then, scrape off the remaining adhesive with a putty knife. Good Luck and thanks for using Hometalk to find an answer :)

You can try using a blow dryer to loosen the adhesive. It really depends on what was used for adhesive as to whether it will damage the drywall underneath it.

If you are going to apply another backsplash of a different material, like tile, you could go right over it with proper preparation.

If you want to remove it and just paint it then you may have to repair the drywall once you remove this piece.
