Plywood help!

Hey, just got some rough edged plywood for an outdoor shelf. How can I make it smooth (I've been told I shouldn't sand plywood!) and outdoor proof? Also are there any techniques for making it look more like real wood??
Thanks

I've sanded plywood so....just be careful not to be too aggressive . To answer the second part of your question , a marine grade polyurethane will make it "outdoor proof . "

i sanded mine. It looks much better! The moor like wood question would be a wood grain roller. They sell them at Home Depot. The final thing would be a good wood sealer. I would paint 3-4 coats for sure.

Yeah, just be careful when sanding. Not just on the board, but yourself as well! Be sure and wear gloves, as plywood can be very splinter-y. Lol And yes, definitely seal with a good wood sealer!

You can sand plywood, not aggressively though. You can sand the edges, but a lot of plywood still has open areas on the edges, maybe fill them with a little wood putty and sanding that smooth, then proceed. I have found that once you stain plywood it often is attractive as is and just put on polyurethane to protect it. I have stained or painted plywood under all of our aquarium stands(8) to protect the floors from the inevitable oopses that happen around water, esp. the 6 saltwater tanks.
