put in garlic bulbs in the fall, I heard this will help, I plant garlic at the 4 corners of my raised bed garden boxes and it works, no Oak tree tho, good luck :-)

@Tudyrunningwater forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question. You plant the garden bulbs in the fall at the corners of your garden bed, When spring arrives and both garlic and flowers are blooming do they blend well together. I'm trying to paint a picture of this in my head because I may try this method in the future.

I'm happy I stopped by your post because I would love to hear every solution possible. I had given up planting Tulips and other bulbs because of squirrels. I could never have any Tulips.... But Yet,, my neighbor had plenty! Why? Because the squirrels would up root mine and plant them in her front garden! Some people use Bone meal but I read somewhere on the net that Squirrels and Chipmunks can develop a taste for it..

Because I have trouble with voles, I sprinkle Mole Max into each daffodil hole when I plant my bulbs. I have noticed the squirrels don't bother those plants so they must not like the castor oil taste of the Mole Max...the voles don't either.

I save the mesh bags onions come in. Cut into squares and wrap around the bulb. Root grow through it, plastic doesn't rot. Also works to wrap around transplants in garden to keep voles out! They can't eat through the plastic mesh.

Vesty, yes they do, you can also plant onions and the extra greenery is verry pretty
  • Squirrels. You could plant the bulbs in rocks. Squirrels really do not dig in rocks. You could also buy chicken wire and make cages for the bulbs to grow out of. Bone meal does not help for most squirrels. I have 13 oaks either in and surrounding my property on a 1/4 acre in the suburbs and the squirrels are horrible. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs now and the squirrels stay out of my yard for the most part now LOL but they venture in and quickly back out when they see them. I have been planting my hostas and other tender perennials in rock now to get the moles and voles from tunneling through. It has helped! Good luck!

Squirrels will generally not bother daffodils, so plant more of those. Tulips and other more palatable bulbs can be planted in a cage made from chicken wire.
