We had to tear down my beloved fireplace mantel after a bunch of termites crawled up through the gas line and ate it! After looking around online for a replacement fireplace surround and nothing tickling my fancy, I decided to build my own country style fireplace mantel. I took some measurements, came up with a plan, sketched out a design and crafted my own DIY Fireplace mantel.
You can see how sad and ugly my wall looked after we ripped out the old, termite eaten fireplace. After we killed the little buggers I patched up the wall and went to my local home improvement store for lumber and decorative molding.
I cut each piece to the size I needed and layed it out before securing everything with glue and nails. I attached the center and two sides of the fireplace mantel by gluing a thin piece of plywood to the back with wood glue and small nails.
After painting and sealing it I screwed the fireplace surround directly into the wall. I used a thick 2" X 10" deep board for the mantel that I stained a dark wood tone. I really like the contrast this adds to the whole fireplace. This DIY project cost me around $150 and I love how it turned out.
