It depends what kind of look you want. There are several hometakers who have posted fireplace projects. Click on the link to see what they did.

You'll need to clean the brick with muriatic acid first to remove any soot. I whitewashed my own fireplace by diluting white paint in water and brushing on until I was happy with the color. I have since removed the brass firescreen and added a gas log set.

To make sure your paint adheres and dries properly, you'll need to thoroughly clean the brick. Use a wire scrub brush to get any dirt or dust, apply nonsudsy trisodium phosphate (also called TSP; wear gloves and safety goggles), and wash thoroughly with a heavy-duty cleaner. Rinse and let dry.

Use regular latex paint. Make sure the bricks are clean to begin with....remove any soot build-up as much as possible. Paint the brick with a standard paintbrush, making sure to cover all areas. You can also dry-brush the paint on if you want more of a washed look to the brick. This will change the look of the bricks less drastically.
