Hi everyone. So I got this tray for $3 at the local Salvation Army. I may or may not have taken a before picture cause I can't find one. Ha! But picture in your head a brown/red stained wood serving tray.
I spray painted the tray white using what I had on hand which was Rust-Oleum Universal Advanced Formula in Gloss White. Then I squirted on various colors of Unicorn SPiT Gel Stains in the middle of the tray.
All the colors used are listed later on. My goal here was a coral/ocean affect which is why I went with these particular colors.
Then I took a 11 x 14 canvas (which just fit inside the tray) and pressed it onto the tray and rubbed the canvas part back and forth with my hand. Then I slowly lifted the canvas from the bottom up.
And this was I ended up with on the tray.
And this is the canvas. I repressed the canvas one more time onto the tray and ended up with a little more definition on the tray.
Here is the tray now that it is dry and ready to be sealed. I continued to add a little more colors to the canvas to fill up the empty space and then pressed the canvas on top of another canvas to create 2 more art pieces. This creates a mirror image effect that can be seen from all four sides of the canvases.
This view looks like a butterfly to me, but I also see a cheetah's face on top in the right picture. What do you see?

I see a mustache in the left image and a cat's face in the right image.
I see some fish and another cat. I love using this technique because you never know what images will emerge. I also printed off 4" x 6" and 8" x 10" close up photos of the canvases and the tray and framed them for matching art.
Depending on which way you display the prints, you will see different images from within.
We have a color laser printer at home, but you can just print off the images at your local store too or do something on-line with them. There are a lot of options.
And here is the 8'x 10" print.
Unicorn SPiT can be purchased through vendors on the Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain Q & A facebook group (which is how I purchase) or currently on-line through Walmart, Amazon, JoAnn Fabrics and Home Depot. The Sparkling Stain is currently only available through select vendors and not on-line stores yet. Here are the colors I used:
Unicorn SPiT Gel & Stain-Zia Teal, Blue Thunder, Phoenix Fire
Unicorn SPiT Sparling Stain-Finchi Fran, Patina Peacock, Onry Oriole, Lici Thunderbird, Flaming Rosie

This can also be entirely done using the Unicorn SPiT Gel & Stain colors.
And after several coats of spray sealant. I love how this turned out. And I love that you can get multiple pieces of art out of one project. Thanks for reading. You can find me on facebook, instagram, pinterest @angelrockstudio.
